4 baby personality types

Just as each of us as individuals has different personalities, each individual baby is different. This expert article about baby personality types will help you to get to know your baby and understand your baby’s temperament will help you understand better how to respond and meet your baby’s needs.

As a parent how you respond to your baby and alter that response as need be, based on your baby’s cues will impact positively on your baby’s response to her world around her. Taking the time over the initial first few months to get to know your baby will have a more positive impact for your baby than trying to impose routines and schedules which are more adult-directed and can be more distressing for your baby. There are four main personality types.

See which one best describes your baby. This will help you understand how your baby responds to stimulation from his environment, how you should alter your response to meet your baby’s needs and in doing so help your baby remain calm and alert during his awake times and develop good sleeping habits for the long term.

1. The Sociable Baby

This baby loves interaction with both her environment and other people. She loves to be held and loves the company of others preferring not to be on her own. Your baby loves to be in the company of others and does not like to be left alone. She also loves to be carried. Whilst loving stimulation from others and the environment, your baby is very prone to becoming overstimulated very quickly without warning because she seeks so much stimulation and her brain is not yet mature enough to deal with all the stimulation.

2. The Slow To Warm Up Baby

This baby is sensitive to change and takes a while to adjust to new situations. He likes reassurance from his parents and prefers to be close to his parents and is happiest when on your lap helping him to remain calm. Your baby likes predictability and is easily upset with changes.

He loves routines. Without a routine he can be hard to manage, often needing to be soothed via feeding or being carried. The slow to warm up baby is easily overwhelmed by stimulation from his environment and new situations. However, as he gets used to a new sensation he will tend to become calmer and will settle better.

3. The Settled Baby

This baby personality type tends to feed and sleep with ease and copes well with stimulation from his environment. Your baby tends to be the baby you hear about who sleeps through the night. However, their development tends to be a little slower than the other personality types as they are content watching the world go by as opposed to being inquisitive and explorative. This baby tends to filter stimulation from the environment well so does not tend to be easily woken by noises etc when sleeping.

4. The Sensitive Baby

As a sensitive baby, they are very alert to their surroundings. Your baby can take a long time to settle and tends to be fussy. Due to their sensitivities to their surroundings, tasks such as breastfeeding can get off to a difficult start due to sensitivities to the feel of the nipple, touch of Mums’ skin and the smell of the breast milk. Your sensitive baby can take longer to develop the skill to self soothe and is very easily overwhelmed by stimulation from the environment.

It is best to feed your baby in a quiet room without distractions for your baby and persist with helping your baby to soothe as your baby does not learn the ability to self soothe as easy as some of the other personality type babies. Your assistance is also needed to filter out stimulation from the environment as your baby does not cope very well with stimulation which may make life more challenging for your baby.

What Our Patients Say

Gráinne Macken

This is my second visit to Merrion Fetal, I was very pleased on both occasions. Lovely quiet waiting room, appointment was on time. The 20-week scan is very detailed we enjoyed watching our baby on the large TV screen. We got some beautiful photos. The nurse was very pleasant and talked us through all the measurements and anatomy. I would highly recommend this scanning clinic.”

Áine Gibney

I had the best experience at the Merrion Fetal Health clinic for my 20-week big scan. The staff were so friendly and so nice and the lovely lady who did my ultrasound scan was amazing. She was so thoroughgoing to absolutely everything and gave me such reassurance on how my baby was growing and developing. I would recommend any Mother to be to attend here if you are looking for a comfortable, reassuring and super pleasant experience.”

Linda O'Sullivan

Highly recommend! We had an early scan due to a little scare at the start of pregnancy and then another at 12 weeks to make sure all was good again. Helen who was scanning on both days was fantastic. We felt totally relaxed and un-rushed while she took her time finding the best angle of baby to get us the clearest pictures as keepsakes all while making sure everything was perfect with baby. She reassured us throughout and I can honestly say it was the best money we ever spent getting both scans done.

Please let Helen know we are 18 weeks now and flying along Highly recommend!
