Growth & Well Being Pregnancy Scan Costs

The growth and well-being pregnancy scan includes photographs and a computerised report. Your sonographer will answer any questions you may have.

22 weeks onwards – €180

What Is Involved?

Growth & well-being pregnancy scans will:

  • determine the lie & presentation of the baby (breech or cephalic)
  • estimate fetal weight
  • determine the location of the placenta
  • measure the fluid around the baby
  • measure the blood flow in the baby’s umbilical artery
  • evaluate the pregnancy for abnormalities
  • determine gender (from 19 weeks of gestation)

42″ Ultrasound Scan Screen

The ultrasound is available for you to view on a 42” screen, which is located on the wall at the end of the ultrasound couch. This allows you to view the images produced by the transducer.

Your sonographer will talk you through what you are seeing on the scan screen.

As this is a medical examination, we kindly ask that children do not attend ultrasound scan appointments. We apologise for the inconvenience and appreciate your co-operation.

Why

Book A Growth & Well-Being Scan

At this scan, your baby’s growth will be assessed. The fluid around the baby will be checked, as will the position of the placenta. Baby’s size is also measured, plus the blood flow in the umbilical cord will be examined. Gender is also determined, when possible. It is not always possible to determine the gender of the baby due to the presentation or lie. If we are unable to determine gender on the day, an appointment for a further scan will be made when hopefully the baby will be in a more favourable position. Gender Determination is 85% accurate.

If you are attending the clinic for this scan, there’s a chance you have been here before. If you haven’t, you will fill in a registration form upon arrival and wait for your sonographer in the waiting room. She will then bring you to the sonographer’s room, where your details will be confirmed before the scan. The aim here, at Merrion Ultrasound, is to make your visit as relaxing as possible. Always feel free to ask the team any questions that you may have.

Merrion Ultrasound Review

Hi there,

I have been meaning to write this for almost a year now, so forgive the delay!

I had my anomaly scan last July with Sarah Madden and I just wanted to say how great she was. Her manner was fantastic, she talked my boyfriend and me through the entire scan, explaining everything she was doing and why. She also told us when she was going to stop talking while examining the scan so that we wouldn’t worry.

Often people in the course of their everyday work forget that others don’t do these things every day, so can gloss over details or assume a level of knowledge. Sarah didn’t do that at all, was friendly and the way she explained everything was spot on.

I know sometimes we can be quick to complain, so I think it’s important to give praise where it’s due.

Please pass on our thanks to Sarah, she made what could have been a nerve-racking experience for first time parents considerably easier.

Kind Regards,
Ruth Scanlan

Growth and Well-Being Pregnancy Scans FAQs

What is a growth and well-being scan?

The growth and well being scan is one of the scans we offer in pregnancy. It assesses the baby’s growth and we can do it from twenty four weeks to term.

What is checked at a growth scan?

With this scan we check where the placenta is, we look at the fluid around the baby and we measure the size of the baby. We can also look at the blood flow in the umbilical cord and it’s something we do from twenty-two weeks right through to term.

Why would you need growth scan?

Some of the common reasons to attend a clinic or hospital for a growth and well-being scan are:

  • An abdomen that is either bigger or smaller for the stage of pregnancy
  • High blood pressure
  • Women who have had complications in previous pregnancies
  • Diabetes

How long does the growth scan take?

Around 30 minutes but it is best to give yourself more time.

Do you get pictures at a growth and well-being?

Yes, you do.

What Our Patients Say

Gráinne Macken

This is my second visit to Merrion Fetal, I was very pleased on both occasions. Lovely quiet waiting room, appointment was on time. The 20-week scan is very detailed we enjoyed watching our baby on the large TV screen. We got some beautiful photos. The nurse was very pleasant and talked us through all the measurements and anatomy. I would highly recommend this scanning clinic.”

Áine Gibney

I had the best experience at the Merrion Fetal Health clinic for my 20-week big scan. The staff were so friendly and so nice and the lovely lady who did my ultrasound scan was amazing. She was so thoroughgoing to absolutely everything and gave me such reassurance on how my baby was growing and developing. I would recommend any Mother to be to attend here if you are looking for a comfortable, reassuring and super pleasant experience.”

Linda O'Sullivan

Highly recommend! We had an early scan due to a little scare at the start of pregnancy and then another at 12 weeks to make sure all was good again. Helen who was scanning on both days was fantastic. We felt totally relaxed and un-rushed while she took her time finding the best angle of baby to get us the clearest pictures as keepsakes all while making sure everything was perfect with baby. She reassured us throughout and I can honestly say it was the best money we ever spent getting both scans done.

Please let Helen know we are 18 weeks now and flying along Highly recommend!
