What Is Involved?
Growth & well-being pregnancy scans will:
- determine the lie & presentation of the baby (breech or cephalic)
- estimate fetal weight
- determine the location of the placenta
- measure the fluid around the baby
- measure the blood flow in the baby’s umbilical artery
- evaluate the pregnancy for abnormalities
- determine gender (from 19 weeks of gestation)
42″ Ultrasound Scan Screen
The ultrasound is available for you to view on a 42” screen, which is located on the wall at the end of the ultrasound couch. This allows you to view the images produced by the transducer.
Your sonographer will talk you through what you are seeing on the scan screen.
As this is a medical examination, we kindly ask that children do not attend ultrasound scan appointments. We apologise for the inconvenience and appreciate your co-operation.
Why
Book A Growth & Well-Being Scan
At this scan, your baby’s growth will be assessed. The fluid around the baby will be checked, as will the position of the placenta. Baby’s size is also measured, plus the blood flow in the umbilical cord will be examined. Gender is also determined, when possible. It is not always possible to determine the gender of the baby due to the presentation or lie. If we are unable to determine gender on the day, an appointment for a further scan will be made when hopefully the baby will be in a more favourable position. Gender Determination is 85% accurate.
If you are attending the clinic for this scan, there’s a chance you have been here before. If you haven’t, you will fill in a registration form upon arrival and wait for your sonographer in the waiting room. She will then bring you to the sonographer’s room, where your details will be confirmed before the scan. The aim here, at Merrion Ultrasound, is to make your visit as relaxing as possible. Always feel free to ask the team any questions that you may have.
Merrion Ultrasound Review
I have been meaning to write this for almost a year now, so forgive the delay!
I had my anomaly scan last July with Sarah Madden and I just wanted to say how great she was. Her manner was fantastic, she talked my boyfriend and me through the entire scan, explaining everything she was doing and why. She also told us when she was going to stop talking while examining the scan so that we wouldn’t worry.
Often people in the course of their everyday work forget that others don’t do these things every day, so can gloss over details or assume a level of knowledge. Sarah didn’t do that at all, was friendly and the way she explained everything was spot on.
I know sometimes we can be quick to complain, so I think it’s important to give praise where it’s due.
Please pass on our thanks to Sarah, she made what could have been a nerve-racking experience for first time parents considerably easier.
Kind Regards,
Ruth Scanlan
