What Is Involved?
Later dating pregnancy scans will:
- verify the baby’s heartbeat
- calculate gestational age and determine the estimated date of delivery
- look for multiples ( twins, triplets, etc.)
- determine that the baby is located within the womb and that the pregnancy is progressing normally at this stage
- examine the placental site
42″ Ultrasound Scan Screen
The ultrasound is available for you to view on a 42” screen, which is located on the wall at the end of the ultrasound couch. This allows you to view the images produced by the transducer.
At this stage in pregnancy, it may not be easy for you to make out what you are seeing on screen, but the sonographer will explain what you are looking at.

Baby’s heartbeat will be verified as viable during this scan. The location of your baby will also be checked.
We will also check the placental site.
When is the best time to book a later dating scan?
This scan is designed to be performed between 10 and 17 weeks of pregnancy.
If you didn’t have (or couldn’t have) an early scan and want a due-date estimate and reassurance, anywhere in this window is appropriate.
Do I need a GP referral to book?
No referral is typically required—you can book directly online.
If your GP or midwife has specific questions, our team are happy to share your report with them.
There is a GP referral option on the website for those who prefer that route.
How accurate is dating at this stage?
Dating in the earlier part of the 10–17-week window is usually more precise.
As your pregnancy progresses into the second trimester, estimates remain useful but may be less exact. Your sonographer will explain what the measurements mean for you.
What exactly is checked during the scan?
At the later dating scan, we confirm the heartbeat, estimate gestational age and estimated date of delivery, check for single or multiple pregnancy, confirm the baby is in the womb, and examine the placental site.

A later-dating scan is a short, focused ultrasound that confirms how far along you are and checks key early-pregnancy milestones. It’s typically performed around 12–17 weeks (late first to early second trimester) and is a helpful option if you didn’t have an early scan, your dates are uncertain, or you just want reassurance before the anatomy scan.
What this scan looks for
During the appointment, your sonographer will confirm a fetal heartbeat, measure your baby to estimate due date (EDD), check for twins or multiples, confirm the pregnancy is correctly located in the uterus, and review the placental site. This isn’t a full anomaly/anatomy assessment—that comes later—but it gives valuable information at this stage.
What to expect on the day
Most later-dating scans are transabdominal (over the tummy). Occasionally, we may recommend a transvaginal scan for clearer images. Please arrive with a comfortably full bladder, as this can improve the views. Your sonographer will talk you through what they’re doing and let you know the findings in plain English.
Results and next steps
You’ll leave with images and a clear, written report. If anything needs a closer look, we’ll explain it right away and arrange the appropriate follow-up. If urgent, this can usually be organised quickly. With your consent, we can also share the report with your obstetrician and/or GP.
A quick note on finding out the baby’s sex
From around 19 weeks, it’s sometimes possible to determine the baby’s sex. Earlier than that, the view is often too limited—so we treat any sex determination before the anatomy scan as not guaranteed. If you’d like us to check when appropriate, just tell your sonographer at the start.
